The BCCI has extended the IPL retention deadline from November 15 to November 17. Player registration closes on November 23 and the mini-auction takes place in Goa on December 16.
Key takeaways
- BCCI extends retention deadline to November 17
- Original deadline was November 15
- Mini-auction is set for December 16 in Goa
- Player registration closes on November 23
- Bid list submission deadline is December 1
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has extended the deadline for Indian Premier League franchises to submit their player retention lists by two days. Teams now have until November 17 to finalise their squads ahead of the mini-auction in Goa on December 16. The BCCI shared the revised deadline with franchises on Monday, replacing the original November 15 cut-off.
Why the deadline was moved
The extension is understood to have been prompted by the India-New Zealand ODI series, with the fifth and final match scheduled at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on November 15. The auction itself will coincide with India’s second ODI against Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
What happens next
Player registration opened on Monday and will close on November 23. Franchises will have until December 1 to submit the list of players they wish to bid for. The final auction register, including the order of player sets, will be released on December 3.
The additional two days should give franchises breathing room as they assess their retention and release decisions, with the transfer market also expected to see activity in the coming fortnight.
Trades and the wider cycle
So far, there have been two trades ahead of the auction. Delhi Capitals have got back their former skipper Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants, with left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav headed the other way.
Capitals also traded fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for legspinner Zeeshan Ansari. This is the last mini-auction in the IPL’s current cycle, with a mega auction scheduled ahead of the 2028 season.
The next mega auction will kick off the IPL’s next media rights cycle, though the BCCI is yet to release the tender. 2 billion.
Season dates
The IPL has not yet finalised the dates for the 2027 season. In 2024, while announcing the dates for the following three seasons, it had chalked out the window between March 14 and May 30. However, in September this year, post the BCCI’s AGM, board secretary Devajit Saikia had indicated that the tournament could start around the end of March.
