Before a story is published, the names, numbers, results and quotes in it are checked against the sources it is based on, preferably official or primary sources such as scorecards and statements from governing bodies, leagues and teams.
A story needs confirmation from more than one source, or from an official source, before we report it as fact.
Quotes are used only when they appear in a source.
Sensitive news, such as injuries, transfers, disciplinary matters and disputes, needs an official source or independent confirmation.
Breaking stories may be updated as facts emerge, and we try to say what is confirmed and what is not.
