Jamie Carragher has apologised to Aston Villa after the Premier League club threatened legal action over comments made on a podcast. The club said on Friday it would initiate legal action against the former Liverpool defender for unacceptable insults about the club and its supporters, according to Hindustan Times.

The podcast comments

The dispute followed Carragher's remarks on the Stick to Football podcast, which was broadcast on Thursday, as reported by Mint. He told Villa supporters to use an expletive and said Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.

He also discussed speculation linking Villa manager Unai Emery with a move to Manchester United. Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris posted on X that Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans.

The post added that Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop its ascension in English and European football.

Carragher's apology

Carragher wrote on social media that he would like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners and their fans. He said his language this week was clumsy and wrong, according to Mint.

He added that it was tongue in cheek but understood it had not come across that way.

Carragher sought to defuse the controversy by saying he made the remarks in jest after the stick Villa fans had given him over saying Emery may fancy joining Manchester United.

He said he hoped clips would show him praising Emery/Villa like he had done for years and saying how pleased he was Villa won the Europa League in Istanbul, according to Hindustan Times.

Background

Carragher is a leading name in soccer punditry, working for British broadcaster Sky Sports and American broadcaster CBS since retiring from playing in 2013, Mint reported. He played as a defender for Liverpool and was the club's vice-captain for ten years. In 2018, Carragher was briefly suspended by Sky after being filmed spitting in the direction of a 14-year-old girl through his car window.
