Punjab Kings are closing in on a deal to acquire Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The trade would see India pacer Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod move to Mumbai Indians in exchange.
Senior management of both franchises have all but agreed to the proposed exchange, with documentation expected to be processed by IPL executives. An official announcement is likely later this week, ahead of the retention deadline of November 17.
Background and other trade talks
Punjab Kings topped the league table twice, in 2014 and 2025, and finished as runners-up both times, losing the finals to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025.
Hardik Pandya captains Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and led Gujarat Titans to the title in 2022. His subsequent three seasons as MI captain yielded little success, with the team finishing near the bottom of the standings twice.
Hardik returned to Mumbai Indians in an all-cash trade from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024. 75 crore to ₹18 crore, which PBKS matched. Mumbai Indians explored trading Hardik with at least three other franchises.
Kolkata Knight Riders was the only other team whose discussions progressed to the next stage, with a potential multi-player deal involving the all-rounder being considered. MI were keen to acquire Harshit Rana and Angkrish Raghuvanshi from KKR, but KKR were unwilling to part with the duo.
Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were reportedly interested earlier, but little progress was made with the first two. In RR's case, MI were said to be interested in Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi, but little progress was made.
In talks with CSK, MI reportedly sought talented batter Ayush Mhatre, but the Chennai-based franchise firmly rejected the proposal.
What happens next
The necessary documentation is expected to go to IPL officials next, with an official announcement likely later this week. The deal must be completed before the IPL 2027 retention deadline of November 17. Punjab Kings may also approach Lucknow Super Giants for a swap involving left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan and Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis if Arshdeep leaves. Hardik’s arrival is expected to limit Stoinis’s role at Punjab.
