Pradosh Ranjan Paul put Tamil Nadu in command against Chandigarh with an unbeaten century on Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 Elite Group D match at Sector-16 Stadium in Chandigarh. Tamil Nadu, having opted to bat, stood at 320 for four at stumps on Monday.

Pradosh anchors Tamil Nadu innings

Pradosh came in at number three after Vimal Khumar fell early. Khumar had a nervous start, negating several LBW appeals before failing to read a sharp delivery from medium pacer Nikhil Sharma and being caught in the slips by Arjit Pannu.

Pradosh completed his 10th First-Class century with a cover drive for four off Rohit Dhanda. He hit 12 fours, never taking the aerial route. He played the ball close to his body and employed the sweep repeatedly against the left-arm spinners.

His knock was noted for excellent running between the wickets.

Partnerships and milestones

N. Jagadeesan made 52 off 88 balls before Bhagmender Lather bowled him just before lunch. Jagadeesan was fluent in the opening partnership with Pradosh and was at his attacking self. B. 1 overs for the third wicket.

Indrajith made 51 off 112 balls with three fours before being caught and bowled by Nishunk Birla following a sharp return catch. The dismissal came after Indrajith became the Tamil Nadu batter with most Ranji Trophy half-centuries, reaching 30 and surpassing S.

Sharath and Hemang Badani, who had 29 each. G. Ajitesh was batting on 34 when play ended, sharing an unbroken 66-run fifth-wicket stand with Pradosh.

Context and reaction

The Ranji Trophy is an annual domestic first-class championship in India organised by the BCCI. The 2026-27 season is the 92nd edition and runs from 11 October 2026 to 3 March 2027. Pradosh’s century was his second of the season.

He failed to make an impact in Tamil Nadu’s win against Railways the previous week. Pradosh said he did not take a moment to soak in the applause when he reached his half-century and celebrated only when he felt he had batted well.

He added that the job was not done and that he would be satisfied if the knock resulted in a win.

What happens next

Tamil Nadu will resume Day 2 at 320 for four, with Pradosh unbeaten on 138 and Ajitesh on 34. Chandigarh will look for early wickets to reduce the deficit.
