Hyderabad hosts Punjab in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at Gymkhana. Tanay Thyagarajan leads Hyderabad’s attack with 20 wickets this season.

Key takeaways

  • Hyderabad hosts Punjab in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group B clash at Gymkhana from Monday.
  • Tanay Thyagarajan leads the season’s bowling charts with 20 wickets.
  • Punjab head coach Amit Uniyal said his side is ready to tackle a spinning track.
  • Hyderabad is chasing its first knockout berth in a decade.
  • Punjab has matched its 2023-24 points tally after a three-season lull.

Hyderabad will host Punjab in a top-of-the-table Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at Gymkhana starting on Monday. Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill might have left their domestic sides for India’s tour of New Zealand, but the stakes at Gymkhana remain high. Hyderabad, having beaten Tripura and Andhra, has brought in Mudassar Hussain as Siraj’s replacement. Punjab, after Assam refused to budge in the opening round, bounced back with a seven-wicket win over Chhattisgarh. It has brought in Anshul Chaudhary, Sukhdeep Singh Bajwa and Raghu Sharma; Gill and Gurnoor Brar making way. The pitch is expected to aid spinners, as it did in Hyderabad’s rout of Tripura a few weeks ago.

Spin threat and batting records

Tanay Thyagarajan leads the season’s bowling charts with 20 wickets, the best match figures (31-4-98-11 vs. Andhra) and the best strike rate (17.5, among bowlers with at least 20 overs). Fellow tweakers Aniketh Reddy and Ruthik Yadav have backed him well, and the trio must bring their best against a Punjab side that has notched up five centuries so far. Salil Arora has been the most consistent with the bat, supported ably by skipper Uday Saharan and Vihaan Malhotra. Hyderabad batters can take heart from the fact that Punjab has conceded three centuries so far. K. Himateja, fresh from his match-winning knock against Andhra, will lead its charge with the willow.

Coach’s view and season stakes

Punjab head coach Amit Uniyal said on the eve of the match, “Even we’re fine with a spinning surface. I don’t believe in playing on flat tracks. We believe that there should be a result [to the contest].” He added, “Most of our batters are taking responsibility. Anybody who is getting set is trying to finish the game. If you’re taking responsibility and building partnerships, you can obviously score big.” Amit acknowledged Hyderabad’s threat, saying, “Since the time Ambati Rayudu joined (HCA), Hyderabad has been doing well. It has won both matches, and the confidence must be high. It doesn’t matter who wins, as long as cricket does.”

Competition context and what happens next

The Ranji Trophy is an annual domestic first-class cricket championship played in India. The 2026–27 Ranji Trophy is the 92nd season of the tournament, scheduled to take place from 11 October 2026 to 3 March 2027 as part of the 2026–27 Indian Domestic Cricket Season announced by the BCCI in June 2026. Jammu and Kashmir are the defending champions after defeating Karnataka in the final of the 2025–26 season to win their maiden Ranji title. Punjab has been in a lull for three seasons and has already matched its 2023-24 points tally, sitting just two short of what it managed in each of the last two editions. Meanwhile, Hyderabad, which now has an extra home match against Chhattisgarh, will look to cement its place at the top as it chases a first knockout berth in a decade. By the final stumps, Amit will want every possible point.
