Tennis legend Rafael Nadal is set to join the board of Spanish football club Real Madrid. The appointment was agreed at a club board meeting on Wednesday. Real Madrid's members will now be asked to ratify Nadal as a new board member at a general assembly on November 21.

What we know

" Nadal won 22 grand slam singles titles during his tennis career before retiring in 2024. Fourteen of those titles came at the French Open, a record at the tournament.

The club's statement added that Nadal has 92 individual titles, two Olympic gold medals, five Davis Cups with Spain and spent time as number one in the world ranking.

He has held honorary membership of Real for years and has been a regular at matches at the Bernabeu. Nadal was a guest of honour at the 2022 Champions League final in Paris, when Real won their 14th Champions League title.

Responding to the appointment on X, Nadal wrote: "I want to thank President Florentino Pérez and the board for proposing that I join the board of directors of @realmadrid. "

Why it matters

Real Madrid are currently third in La Liga after 11 games, three points behind defending champions Barcelona.

The club went a second season without a trophy in La Liga, the Champions League or the Copa del Rey before president Florentino Pérez appointed Jose Mourinho to a second spell as head coach.

Pérez was re-elected to serve a new four-year term as Real president in June, having held the office since 2009. It is currently unclear as to what responsibilities Nadal would hold on the club's board.

What happens next

Real Madrid's general assembly will meet on November 21 to ratify Nadal's appointment.
