Kon Knueppel left his first game of the 2026-27 season in the opening quarter against the Brooklyn Nets after a turnover and a visible limp, with early reports pointing to his left hamstring. The Charlotte Hornets had not confirmed a diagnosis or whether he would return.

Knueppel played less than six minutes of his season debut Wednesday night before the Hornets pulled him. He lost the ball with 6:09 left in the first quarter, limped to the bench and headed for the locker room, only hours after Charlotte cleared him to play.

The 21-year-old guard was handling the ball when he turned it over and seemed to favor his left leg right away. Coach Charles Lee took him out at once.

Knueppel walked to the bench gingerly, and video online showed him bent over near the sideline while a staff member checked on him. A short time later he made his way toward the tunnel.

The Hornets had not announced his status for the rest of the game. No new diagnosis was confirmed, so it was unclear whether he re-aggravated the old strain or felt something different. The strain came during offseason workouts.

He missed the preseason and Charlotte's first eight regular-season games, and the team sent him to its G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, to take part in basketball activities during the recovery. Tuesday's report had him as probable. By Wednesday afternoon he was listed as available.

6 percent from three. The Hornets had dropped four in a row after opening 3-1.

Coby White, back from a calf injury, played his first game of the season only on Monday against Detroit, so the rotation had barely begun to fill out when Knueppel left the floor. Knueppel was supposed to help with a lot of this.

4 assists over 81 games as a rookie. His 273 made threes set an NBA rookie record and made him the first rookie to lead the league in the category.

The Hornets now await word on Knueppel's health as the team sits last in the league in scoring.
