Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the second T20I against New Zealand after suffering a low-grade right adductor strain during the series opener in Christchurch. The BCCI confirmed the update on Friday morning and said its medical team is monitoring his progress.

What we know

Kishan batted at number five in the first T20I instead of his usual number three position. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said the change was linked to Kishan's groin strain. He added that it is unlikely Kishan will play in Saturday's match unless he recovers completely.

India chased down 226 in the first T20I with four wickets in hand and two balls to spare. Tilak Varma made six off 11 balls at number three, while Kishan scored one off three balls. Varma was dismissed by Michael Bracwell and Santner removed Kishan.

Vaibhav could definitely step in for him.

What happens next

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could return to India's playing XI for the second T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. He was on the bench for the five-match T20I series against the West Indies.

Sooryavanshi has played eight T20Is for India, scoring 246 runs at a strike rate of 186.36 with two half-centuries. He made 776 runs in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. Ahead of the first T20I, captain Shreyas Iyer said Sooryavanshi needed to wait for his opportunity because Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson were scoring consistently as openers.
