Glenn Maxwell, the star Australian all-rounder, announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday. The 38-year-old played 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is, and seven Tests, representing Australia in 286 matches while scoring 7226 runs and taking 136 wickets.
Maxwell was a member of the Australian squads that won the 2015 ODI World Cup, the 2021 T20 World Cup, and the 2023 ODI World Cup. He holds the record for the most number of T20I hundreds with five alongside India’s Rohit Sharma.
His definitive knock came in the 2023 World Cup league stage game against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium, when a hobbling Maxwell smashed 201 not out off just 128 balls to help Australia chase down 292 after his side had collapsed to 91/7.
Maxwell had earlier announced his retirement from One Day International cricket on June 2, 2025, after a 149-match career. His last T20I was in February 2026 in a T20 World Cup match against Oman, where he picked up two wickets and did not bat.
He was not picked on Monday for Australia’s T20I series against England that starts on November 21.
He has also retired from first-class cricket and the List A game, though he remains available for the Melbourne Stars in the BBL having had his contract extended to the 2027-28 season.
Why it matters
Maxwell said he and Australia team management had numerous discussions before and after the T20 World Cup, and it was pretty open ended with no pressure from that side.
He said there was a couple of series coming up and they were going to look to the future, which they saw in Bangladesh with guys getting their opportunity and performing really well.
Maxwell said he had hoped to play one last match for Australia at his home ground, the MCG, but he could completely understand the direction they were going with the squad.
He noted there is going to be a lot of change over the next 12 to 24 months with the Olympics coming up in 2028, and they have to make sure they get their eyeballs on a few young guys coming through and making sure they are getting exposed to international pressure that you probably cannot always get from a BBL fixture.
Maxwell also said he thought about the idea of getting ready for the England T20Is, and the option was there, but he was sort of ready to push the button.
What happens next
Maxwell has remained active in the franchise circuit. Five days later, he represented Victoria for two matches in the One-Day Cup.
Post the last one-day game for Victoria, speaking to his team-mates and letting them know that that was going to be his last game for the state was probably harder than he thought it was going to be.
He said his team-mates have played such a huge role in his whole career, every time he came back he had great team-mates there and a lot of support from the state. Australia’s T20I series against England starts on November 21 without Maxwell in the squad.
