India vice-captain Shafali Verma has been handed an official reprimand after breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20I against Zimbabwe. The incident took place in Raipur on Sunday, where India secured a nine-wicket victory. Verma admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction, meaning no formal hearing was required.
What we know
The breach occurred in the 12th over of Zimbabwe’s innings. Shafali dropped Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano at mid-off off the bowling of Shree Charani and then threw the ball to the ground in frustration. This contravenes Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Vrinda Rathi and Gayathri Venugopalan, third umpire Anna Harris and fourth umpire Janani Narayanan. One demerit point has been added to Shafali’s disciplinary record. As it was her first offence in a 24-month period, the sanction was limited to an official reprimand.

What happens next
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points. Because Shafali accepted the proposed sanction from G.S. Lakshmi of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees, the matter is now closed.
