England have been dealt a hammer blow to their seam bowling department for the upcoming tour of Australia as Josh Tongue will miss the trip down under due to a toe injury.

Tongue had been selected in England's one day squad for the tour down under but will remain behind due to a toe injury.

There was no confirmation on whether a replacement would be called up to the squad ahead of the first of three ODIs due to be played in Australia from 13-18 November though it seems unlikely at this late stage.

The ODI and T20 squads for the tour were announced three weeks ago with Tongue only included in the one day squad and the 28-year-old was due to return back to the UK following the conclusion of the ODI series alongside fellow quick bowlers Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Sonny Baker.

Jamie Overton is also included in the squad so there is plenty of cover for Tongue following his withdrawal and return to England. Tongue made his One Day International (ODI) debut earlier this year in a contest against India in Birmingham.

He took 1-50 from his 10 overs and has since been selected in four other one day games. His most recent outing was against Sri Lanka in the ODI Tri-Series which also included Pakistan.

5 overs as the Sri Lankans made history by knocking off 429 runs with one ball remaining in the game. Tongue bowled the final over.

A regular member of England's Test side over the last 12 months, Tongue made his ODI debut earlier this year. He has also been part of England's emerging fast-bowling group across formats, alongside Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Sonny Baker.

The ODI squad includeds two changes from the one that travelled to Pakistan for last month's tri-series as Jacob Bethell returns following a knee injury and Archer is back after being rested for the tri-series.

Harry Brook (Yorkshire – captain), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Sonny Baker (Hampshire), Tom Banton (Somerset), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Jordan Cox (Essex), Henry Crocombe (Surrey), Sam Curran (Surrey), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Will Jacks (Surrey), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire).

Tongue's absence comes ahead of England's busy winter schedule, which includes a three-Test series in South Africa. The injury will now see Tongue undergo further assessment in the UK as England prepare for their limited-overs assignments in Australia.
