Auction date, venue and retention deadline

The IPL 2027 mini-auction will be held in Goa on December 16. Sportstar reported that the one-day auction coincides with the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka, which will be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The event returns to India for the first time since 2022, with the last three auctions held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. Franchises must finalise player retentions by November 15. Mint reported that after retention, franchises will shortlist from the registered pool of players along with the order of the sets.

Trades and player movement

Teams can trade after the retention deadline until one week before the auction date. Only two trades have been announced so far. The biggest trade was Rishabh Pant's return to Delhi Capitals. Pant, bought for ₹27 crore by Lucknow Super Giants before IPL 2025, returned to the franchise where he spent nine seasons between 2016 and 2024. Following the trade, Pant re-joined Delhi Capitals at a revised fee of ₹15 crore. As part of the trade, Kuldeep Yadav joined Lucknow Super Giants after five seasons at Delhi Capitals. The left-arm wrist spinner joins Lucknow at his existing fee of ₹13.50 crore. T Natarajan returned to Sunrisers Hyderabad while Delhi Capitals welcomed leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari following a player trade between the two franchises. Natarajan will join Sunrisers Hyderabad at a revised fee of ₹5 crore. Ansari will join Delhi Capitals at his existing fee of ₹40 lakh.

Why this auction matters

This will be the last mini-auction as the IPL is set for a mega auction in 2027 for the 2028 season. The last time an IPL auction was held in India was in 2022 in Kochi, ahead of the 2023 season. Nothing has been officially announced by the BCCI.

What happens next

The IPL trade window closes one week before the auction date. The second ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru takes place on the same day as the auction.
