Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India’s para-athletes at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on Thursday and hailed their record 114-medal campaign at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, urging them to target the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.

India finished fourth overall at the Games, which ran from 18 to 24 October 2026, winning 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze medals from 97 para-athletes. It was India’s fifth appearance at the Asian Para Games and the country’s best-ever campaign at the event.

The record haul

The medal haul came across archery, athletics, shooting, swimming, table tennis, badminton, judo and powerlifting. Of the 61 debutants in the contingent, 36 returned with medals. Indian athletes produced five world records and nine Asian records and secured podium sweeps in four events.

Double gold medallists Sheetal Devi, the armless archer, and visually impaired sprinter Simran attended the interaction with the Prime Minister, who was also seen feeding sweets to some of them.

Modi’s message

Modi recalled that India had won only 14 medals, including one gold, at the 2010 edition, and said the jump to 114 medals in 2026 reflected the immense talent and potential of the country’s para-athletes.

About the Games

The Asian Para Games, also known as Para Asiad, is a multi-sport event regulated by the Asian Paralympic Committee and held every four years after the Asian Games for athletes with physical disabilities.

The event is recognised by the International Paralympic Committee and is described as the second largest multi-sport event after the Paralympic Games.

The 2026 edition, also known as the 5th Asian Para Games and Aichi-Nagoya 2026, was held from 18 to 24 October 2026 around Aichi Prefecture in Japan. Nagoya, the capital city of Aichi Prefecture, was the first Japanese city to host the Asian Para Games.

The event returned to its traditional four-year cycle after the 2022 edition was postponed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What happens next

Modi urged the para-athletes to turn their Aichi-Nagoya success into a springboard for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse were present at the event in New Delhi.
