Lauri “Cyanide” Happonen, the Finnish League of Legends player who won the 2011 World Championship with Fnatic, has died at the age of 31. Esports.gg reported that a separate source confirmed with the Finnish Digital and Population Data Services Agency that Cyanide passed away on July 31st. TalkEsport said the news was first brought to light by Finnish outlet Ilta-Sanomat and that he died on July 31, 2026. The exact cause of death has not been made public.

Career and achievements

Cyanide was one of the youngest stars in the early years of League of Legends. During his tenure with Fnatic, he became the youngest player ever to win Worlds at just 16 years of age. The 2011 title was the first World Championship won by a European team, and it remains the only one taken by a team from outside Asia. Cyanide garnered several titles during his four-year-long stint as a professional LoL player for Fnatic. His most notable achievement is lifting the Summoner’s Cup at the first-ever LoL Worlds. He was a three-time EU LCS Champion. Fnatic took 2013 Spring, 2013 Summer, and 2014 Spring, all achieved with Cyanide on the roster. Afterwards, he took on the colors of Origen, before largely disappearing from the scene.

Recent appearances and tributes

Cyanide then showed up at the EU LCS League Classic showmatch in July 2026. TalkEsport reported that he was still involved in the community this year, participating in the League Classic showmatch on July 24 as part of Team Dynasty. His ex-teammate Bora “YellOwStaR” Kim shared a photo from one of Cyanide’s public appearances: the EU LCS League Classic Showmatch back in July 2026. “We saw each other again at the showmatch in July, and he was still full of dreams, plans, and projects for the future. You will be deeply missed, brother. Thank you for the memories, the time we shared, and for the person you were,” wrote YellOwStar. TalkEsport reported that former teammate YellOwStaR also paid tribute to the legend, saying Cyanide was “much more than a teammate” to him. “He was one of the kindest, most genuine souls I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing,” he said.

Community response and what happens next

Shortly after the news surfaced on the internet, Fnatic expressed its condolences via an X post. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lauri ‘Cyanide’ Happonen earlier this year,” the org said. “During his four-year spell at Fnatic, Cyanide made history as the youngest ever player to win Worlds at just 16. He leaves behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.” Many esports organizations, especially European ones, sent their support in the replies and quote posts. Among them were EU LCS OGs G2 Esports and SK Gaming. Other players and personalities like Erberk “Gilius” Demir, Alex “Nymaera” Hapgood, Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles were also among those who shared their love for the iconic jungler. Many fans pointed out the tragic fact that this succeeds the passing of his teammate and fellow Worlds champion Maciej “Shushei” Ratuszniak. Esports.gg noted that the cause of death is unknown. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Cyanide’s family, friends, and loved ones in these trying times.
