Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the 15-member squad on Friday, with Aiden Markram retained as captain for a second successive T20 World Cup. After spending more than two months on the sidelines with a rib injury, Kagiso Rabada has also made a timely return to the national setup, earning selection in South Africa’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The tournament will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, beginning on February 7.
Rabada’s comeback is a major boost for the Proteas, who will once again rely on pace as their primary weapon. The fast bowler is set to lead a strong and varied attack that includes Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, and exciting teenage left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka. The mix of experience, pace, and bounce gives South Africa the firepower to challenge even the strongest batting line-ups in subcontinental conditions.
Spin duties will be handled by Keshav Maharaj, who brings control and leadership, with George Linde offering support and all-round value. Captain Markram and Donovan Ferreira provide additional spin options, adding flexibility to the bowling unit.
The squad reflects a clear shift towards the future, with seven players set to make their T20 World Cup debut. Among them are promising batters Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, and Jason Smith, alongside all-rounders Linde and Ferreira, and bowlers Bosch and Maphaka. Their inclusion signals CSA’s intent to build depth while backing young talent on the world stage.
At the same time, the squad retains a solid core of experience. Seven players were part of South Africa’s run to the final of the T20 World Cup 2024, including Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Maharaj, Jansen, and Nortje—a campaign that ended in heartbreak with a loss to India in the final at Barbados.
Notable absentees include Heinrich Klaasen, who has retired from international cricket, along with Tristan Stubbs, Gerald Coetzee, and former world No.1 T20I bowler Tabraiz Shamsi.
Still chasing their maiden men’s T20 World Cup title, South Africa are placed in Group D alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Canada, and the UAE. The Proteas will begin their campaign against Canada on February 9 in Ahmedabad, hopeful that a blend of youth, pace, and experience can finally deliver global glory.
