## Article

Rohit Sharma is set to replace Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians captain for IPL 2027, according to reports. The franchise has reportedly convinced the 39-year-old to take over after a series of talks, and Rohit has agreed to return to the role he held from 2013 to 2023. Mumbai Indians have still not made an official announcement on the captaincy.

Rohit Sharma captained Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2023 and led the franchise to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He is an Indian international cricketer who has won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy as captain of India.

Mumbai Indians finished ninth last season after losing 10 of their 14 games and stretched their wait for a title to six years. The franchise also finished at the bottom of the table in 2024 and 2026, according to reports, and made the playoffs in 2025.

Hardik Pandya was made skipper before the 2024 season following his return to Mumbai from the Gujarat Titans, and his captaincy drew heavy criticism after an all-cash trade, with the crowd at the Wankhede Stadium booing him repeatedly during home games.

Mumbai Indians carried out a complete overhaul of their support staff over the past week. Kieron Pollard has been given charge of the franchise as head coach, as against Mahela Jayawardene. Robin Uthappa, Mitchell McClenaghan, T Dilip and Dhawal Kulkarni are the newest additions to the fresh support staff.

Rohit initially suggested Tilak Varma’s name for the captaincy, but the franchise requested him to take over, which he has now agreed to. There were a series of talks before he flew to New Zealand, and Rohit’s suggestions were sought during the appointment of new coaches.

The IPL mini-auction is scheduled for December, ahead of the 2027 season. Hardik Pandya has been linked with Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings in a possible trade since last season, but reports have indicated that no formal offer has been made to Mumbai Indians. If no trade takes place, he is understood to have agreed to play under Rohit’s captaincy.
