## Article

Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui reclaimed her New York City Marathon crown on Sunday, finishing in two hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds, Sportstar reported. Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won the men’s race in his marathon debut in 2:06:01, the same source said.

## Women’s race

Chepkirui, the 2024 champion, ran alone across the finish line two years after holding off compatriot Hellen Obiri, Sportstar reported.

Obiri had looked set for second place but Jess McClain sprinted past her in the final moments to take silver in 2:24:42, one second faster than Obiri.

“The last mile was really tricky and I had to be patient because I knew Hellen was really strong,” Chepkirui said.

” Chepkirui and Obiri broke away from the lead pack with about four miles to go, and Obiri ran on Chepkirui’s heels for much of the final stretch of the course, hoping for more magic after breaking the course record last year.

## Men’s race

Almgren, the half-marathon world champion, finished 13 seconds ahead of Italian Yemaneberhan Crippa, Sportstar reported. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho was third in 2:06:26.

Almgren stayed with a crowded lead pack through the famously demanding and hilly course before pulling away from defending champion Benson Kipruto with one mile left, according to Sportstar.

He had built such a comfortable lead by the final metres that he jogged across the line, waving his arms as he coaxed more cheers from the crowd. “You can’t ask for a better debut,” Almgren said. ”

## About the event

The event featured nearly 60,000 runners across all five boroughs of New York City, the Economic Times reported.
