## Article

Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov will challenge India’s D Gukesh for the FIDE World Chess Championship 2026 crown in Geneva, Switzerland, in November. The match marks the first time in World Chess Championship history that two 20-year-olds are fighting for the biggest prize in the sport.

Gukesh, the reigning World Chess Champion, became the youngest undisputed world champion two years ago by beating Ding Liren in Singapore. He earned the grandmaster title at age 12 and is the fourth-youngest grandmaster in chess history.

Gukesh is coming into the match after winning a team silver medal at the Chess Olympiad 2026. Sindarov earned the right to challenge Gukesh by winning the Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus with a round to spare.

The eight-player double round-robin tournament took place at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia between 28 March and 16 April 2026. Sindarov’s unbeaten Candidates performance included six wins and eight draws for a score of 10 out of 14.

This followed his victory at the 2025 FIDE World Cup. Born in Tashkent, Sindarov comes from a well-to-do family where his father is a businessman and his mother is a school teacher.

His grandfather Komil Sindarov introduced him to chess at four and a half years old. Komil is the vice president of the Chess Federation of Uzbekistan and has written several detective novels.

Sindarov became a grandmaster in 2018 at 12 years, 10 months, and 8 days old, making him the second-youngest grandmaster in chess history at the time.

He was a member of the Uzbekistan teams that won gold at the 44th Chess Olympiad and the 46th Chess Olympiad. Sindarov currently leads the 2026–27 FIDE Circuit, which gives him another potential route into the next Candidates Tournament.

In 2026, he has played four major classical tournaments so far, registering 14 wins, 29 draws, and just two defeats in 45 games. 5-point deficit on the final day. The two players know each other from their junior days.

Sindarov holds the edge over Gukesh in classical encounters, with one win and two draws in three recorded meetings identified by ChessTV. Their last classical meeting was at the Tata Steel Chess tournament in January, which ended in a draw.

In faster chess, Gukesh defeated Sindarov during the Grand Chess Tour rapid event in Warsaw earlier this year. If either player withdraws from the championship match, GM Anish Giri is first in line to enter. If a second replacement is required, GM Fabiano Caruana is next.
